October’s Table of Contents

editorial by Camille Gooderham Campbell

From the Editors

It’s October! Happy pumpkin-spice-and-miniature-candy-bar season!

This month is full of special occasions, and while some of them will be familiar to you, others might not. On October 4th, for Kanelbullens dag (Cinnamon Roll Day), we are featuring “Recipe for Change” by Laura Besley. Then, for World Teachers’ Day on October 5th, we have “Sarah” by Brad Shurmantine. On October 8th, we will publish “Mandelbroyt” by Jane R. Snyder to mark Yom Kippur, and on October 10th, we’ll give you “A Nice Cup of Tea” by Jane S Conroy for World Mental Health Day.

Our Halloween week is always something to look forward to! This year, we’ll start with “Trick or Treat” by M O Bishop on October 28th (some humour for the Monday of the week!), think about horror movies with “Last Rites of the Monster” by long-time EDF contributor Nicholas Ozment, have some “Coffee With the Devil” by Bethany Votaw to prepare for Samhain and the darker time of the year, and finally celebrate Halloween with “King Valerie the First” by Dianne M. Williams.

Enjoy, and please do comment on the stories and give them some stars. Our authors love to know that their stories are being read, and sometimes they’ll even join the conversation.

For Writers

We have two new slush readers on board — MiKayla Milburn and Jerry Robinette have joined the EDF team, and we’re so very glad to have them! It’s always exciting to have thoughtful new voices adding feedback to the submissions and helping with final decisions.

We could still use more volunteers to get up to full strength, so check out the application information here if you might be interested in reading submissions with us.

Submissions are now open for stories targeted at holidays and occasions in November and December:

  • SUBMIT HERE for November-specific stories (including Guy Fawkes Day, Remembrance Day / Veterans Day, World Kindness Day, American Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Red Planet Day, and more); closes October 27th.
  • SUBMIT HERE for December-specific stories (including Winter Solstice / Midwinter / Yule, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, New Year’s Eve, and more); closes November 26th.

Please note that general submissions (publishable at any time) need to be submitted through our main submissions form; the month-specific ones are for stories that would only be suitable for publication during the month or season in question.
