April’s Table of Contents

From the Editors

It’s spring at last — at least according to the calendar — and we have some exciting news: Every Day Fiction has just launched a new flash fiction blog, coordinated and edited by Gay Degani. As part of our goal to support the growth of quality flash fiction for writers and readers online and in print, the blog is dedicated to the discussion of the art and craft of flash fiction, fiction in general, and the issues of writing, marketing, and publishing today. Contributors so far include Sarah Hilary, Alexander Burns, C.L. Holland, DJ Barber and Erin M. Kinch. Do you have something to say about flash fiction? If you’d like to become a contributor, check out the blog submission guidelines for more information.

In other news, slush reader K.C. Ball is a finalist in the Writers of the Future competition for the first quarter of 2009, and we’re all waiting with fingers crossed to hear the final results. This major competition can be such a career boost that it has its very own section on our forums, and reaching finalist status is an achievement in itself. Readers may remember that this is the same competition in which managing editor Jordan Lapp took first place for the third quarter of 2008.

Finally, over at our sister site Every Day Poets, editor Nicholas Ozment has become a father — congratulations, Nick, and welcome to the world Irelyn Ruby!

For Readers:

As always, we have an interesting variety of stories coming your way, from EDF newcomers like Leigha Butler and Rodello Santos as well as some reader favourites including Stephanie Scarborough and Sarah Black.

For your holiday entertainment, we’re featuring “Dangerous Skies” by Gustavo Bondoni on April 12th, and — whether it means church or chocolate or just a statutory holiday to you — we wish you a Happy Easter!

For Writers:

We’ve had another change in the slush reading department; Davina Colpman has moved on to other things, so you won’t be seeing her comments on your stories anymore. We’ll miss her, and we wish her the best of luck.

Also, if you’re sending us a story suited to a particular day, month, or season, we suggest that you submit it between 60 and 120 days (two to four months!) in advance of the target time.  Sadly, we sometimes miss the opportunity to publish a holiday piece if it doesn’t come in until after we’ve already put together the calendar for the month in question, and we’re not set up to hold pieces over for the following year.
